What is the Chartered Trust & Estate Planner (CTEP™)?

CTEP™ Course — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Chartered Trust & Estate Planner (CTEP™) certification?+
CTEP™ is AAFM's globally recognised credential for professionals advising on wills, trusts, estate planning, succession and inheritance. Awarded by AAFM USA, it is India's definitive trust-and-estate-planning designation.
Who can do the CTEP™ — am I eligible?+
Graduates in finance, accounting, economics or business, and professionals such as wealth managers, private bankers, advisors and legal/tax professionals. You can enrol after 10+2; certification is granted on graduation. Students aiming for a specialised niche are welcome too.
How long does it take and is it online?+
It is delivered online with module-based learning, live and recorded training, an online LMS and a dedicated student relationship officer — so you study flexibly around work or college.
How is the CTEP™ exam structured?+
You earn the charter with a single exam — a 2-hour online MCQ of up to 150 marks, 50% to pass, with no negative marking, held round the year via Pearson VUE at 4,500+ centres.
What does the CTEP™ cover?+
Six units: the estate-planning process; succession and trust laws; personal and intestate succession in India; wills, trusts and tax planning through trusts; advanced estate and succession planning (including minors, special situations and philanthropy); and international/cross-border trust and estate planning.
What does the CTEP™ cost?+
The programme is ₹47,200 inclusive of study material, with pay-later options. Exam and certification fees may apply separately.
Why is estate planning a strong career choice right now?+
India is undergoing one of its largest intergenerational wealth transfers, yet fewer than 10% of advisors are formally trained in estate and succession planning. That makes it one of the least crowded, highest-impact and best-paid advisory niches — and because estate skills are scarce, qualified professionals command high remuneration.
What careers can the CTEP™ lead to?+
Roles include estate and succession planner, trust advisor, family-office professional, private banker and wealth manager — across banks, family offices, wealth boutiques and legal firms, or as an independent estate planner.
Is the CTEP™ recognised internationally?+
Yes — awarded by AAFM USA (GAFM) and recognised across 151+ countries, with AAFM's ISO 29990 certification and AACSB/ACBSP recognition.
CTEP™ vs CFP — what's the difference?+
CFP covers broad financial planning but treats estate planning lightly. The CTEP™ is a deep specialisation in trusts, wills and succession — exactly the high-value capability that CFP and generalist advisors lack. Many planners add the CTEP™ to serve HNI/UHNI clients fully.
