A B.Com is a brilliant launchpad — but the degree alone doesn’t tell employers what you can do. The graduates who move fastest pair it with a job-ready skill. Here are seven finance careers worth aiming for, what they pay (indicative industry ranges), and the certification that opens each door.
1. Relationship Manager (wealth & private banking)
You manage client relationships at a bank or wealth firm — understanding goals, recommending products, growing the relationship. A natural first finance job. Indicative pay: from about ₹3.6 LPA, rising fast with performance. Best cert: CWM® or the shorter AWM®.
2. Wealth Manager / Advisor
A step up from RM — you build full financial plans and advise on investments, tax and protection for affluent clients. Indicative pay: ₹6–18 LPA in advisory/family-office roles, far higher at senior levels. Best cert: CWM®.
3. Financial / Equity / Research Analyst
You analyse companies and securities, build models and back investment calls with evidence — for banks, broking houses and AMCs. Indicative pay: ~₹4–18 LPA depending on role and employer. Best cert: AFA® (or the Ch.E™ for economics/research).
4. Portfolio / Fund Manager
You construct and manage portfolios for clients or institutions. In India, portfolio managers earn an average around ₹11 LPA — from ~₹4 LPA to ₹30 LPA at large AMCs and foreign banks. Best cert: CPM®.
5. Estate & Succession Planner
A fast-growing, under-served niche — advising families on wills, trusts and passing wealth across generations. Because the skill is scarce, it’s well paid (₹6–18 LPA indicative, more in HNI practice). Best cert: CTEP™.
6. Personal Financial Planner
You help individuals organise their whole money life — goals, investments, tax and protection — at an advisory firm or your own practice. A great fit if you like working directly with people. Best cert: CPFS PRO® (or start with the beginner CPFS®).
7. Economist / Data & Research roles
You read the economy — inflation, rates, policy — and turn it into forecasts and insight for banks, consultancies and think-tanks. Indicative pay: ~₹4–15 LPA across analyst and policy roles. Best cert: Ch.E™.
How to stand out as a B.Com graduate
Three things consistently separate the graduates who get hired: a recognised certification (proof of job-ready skill), practical ability (can you actually advise, analyse or plan?), and clarity about the role you want. Pick one path above, get the matching credential, and you’re ahead of most of your batch.
Salary figures are indicative industry ranges, not a guarantee — actual pay varies by role, employer, location and experience.
